WANG Chen
WANG Chen incorporates drawing, sculpture, costume, performance, and 3D game design to create highly saturated fictional dreamscapes in digital video. Inspired by ancient East Asian mythology, Wang’s characters use a singular range of motion to signal their uniforms, uniformity, and emotions. By intertwining queer sexual identities within heteronormative social constructs, WANG aims to shift cultural and political power into new radical spaces.
WANG Chen (b.1991-Hohhot, China) received a BFA in Painting from Virginia Commonwealth University (2014) and an MFA in Photography from the Rochester Institute of Technology (2018). WANG has exhibited internationally; including the Stockholm Fringe Festival (2018), The Maracay International Film & Video Festival in Venezuela (2018), The Immigrant Artist Biennial, NYC (2020), and the current solo exhibition The Sin Park, at Fotografiska, in Stockholm, Sweden (2021).
WANG’s fellowships, awards, and residencies include The Studios at MASS MoCA, Vermont Studio Center, the NYFA Immigrant Mentoring Program, and NARS Artist Foundation in Brooklyn. WANG Chen is currently an artist in residence at the year-long residency program in Roswell, New Mexico.
